Baseball's Comeback Falls Short to Marist

Trailing by as many as 15 runs after the fifth inning, Canisius cut its deficit to one in the eighth, but ultimately fell to Marist, 18-17, in a thrilling MAAC baseball contest at the Demske Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Max Grant went 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and three runs. Senior Trevor Henneman also drove in five runs, going 2-for-3 with a home run after appearing as a defensive replacement. Graduate students Mike Steffan and Gibson Krzeminski both had three RBI. Krzeminski also hit a round-tripper for the Golden Griffins (16-15, 7-4).

Reece Armitage went 3-for-5 while driving in a game-high six RBI for Marist (17-12, 7-4).

Erubiel Candelario earned the victory for the Red Foxes despite allowing 10 hits and 10 runs during his 5.2 innings. He walked four and struck out five. Drake Quinn earned his third save, allowing one hit in two relief innings.

Junior Chris Pouliot had his five-game winning streak snapped after he could not escape the third inning. He surrendered eight runs (two earned) on five hits while walking two and fanning three.

GAME RECAP
Canisius opened the scoring in the home half of the first inning on a two-run home run by Grant to deep center field.

Pouliot cruised through the first two innings, throwing just 25 pitches and retiring all six Marist batters who came up to the plate. In the third, following a walk and single, Pouliot was able to get the second out of the inning before the Red Foxes scored 13 runs in a two-out rally.

An RBI single by Reece Armitage gave Marist its first run of the inning before his brother, Robbie, hit an RBI ground-rule double to tie the game.

The next three batters would drive in runs as Brian Hart reached on a fielding error that scored a run. Gavin Noriega and Johnny Decker hit RBI singles that increased the Red Foxes' lead to 5-2. Donnie Stone's RBI single was the first of four consecutive run-scoring plays for Marist, increasing its lead to 11-2. A run scored on a passed ball and Hart's RBI single gave the Red Foxes a 13-2 advantage.

Offensively, Marist was not done as the Red Foxes plated three runs in the fourth to raise its lead to 16-2. Consecutive hit batters with the bases loaded enabled Robbie Armitage to hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Red Foxes a 14-run cushion.

Dylan Hoy added an insurance marker for Marist in the fifth on an RBI single.

Canisius' comeback attempt began in the sixth inning as the Griffs scored 10 runs in the frame. Six of the team's 10 runs came with two outs, even though the first six batters of the inning reached safely. Steffan drove in Grant, who led the inning off with a walk, with an opposite field RBI double. After a wild pitch advanced Steffan to third, Krzeminski singled him home. Senior Kyle Kush and Henneman added RBI singles to make it 17-6.

Following a Marist double play, freshman Jackson Strong and senior Jake Zurat drew consecutive walks, setting up a two-RBI single by Grant. Canisius' rally continued following a Marist pitching change as Steffan recorded his second extra-base hit in the inning. Steffan's two-run triple to the left-center field gap enabled Krzeminski to make it a 17-12 contest with a two-run home run.

The rally for Canisius continued in the seventh as Grant drove in his fifth run of the day with an RBI single to center field.

Canisius opened the eighth inning with the first three batters reaching base safely. Krzeminski was hit by a pitch before senior Dylan Vincent and Kush recorded singles, loading the bases. Henneman trimmed the Red Foxes' lead to 18-17 with a grand slam to left field.

After Henneman's blast, Marist's Drake Quinn allowed a single to junior Brennan Chisholm to open his outing but retired the final five Canisius batters he faced to preserve the win for the Red Foxes.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a wild one. One of the wildest ones I've been a part of in a long time. We didn't do too well defensively and on the mound early in the game. We kept fighting back offensively to pull within one and just didn't have enough of what it took to get the victory today. There's some moral victory inside of that game today that hopefully carries forward for us.

"I'm extremely proud of the group to fight back in a game like that. It's very easy to go away, be quiet and whimper over your wounds, but they didn't do that. They stayed together, believed in themselves and believed in one another. That's what it takes to get out of holes like that and they know that now. It's just a good job by them.

"Tomorrow, Marist has a good guy on the mound and we're going to have to have a good approach in the box again and we will be prepared for that."
