Softball Splits Midweek Doubleheader at Syracuse

Graduate student Shealyn Ollison tossed her first complete game, leading Canisius to a 4-3 victory over Syracuse in the opening game of Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader at Skytop Softball Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.

The host Orange defeated the Golden Griffins, 12-1, in five innings to split Wednesday's contests.

Canisius moved to 16-15 on the season with the doubleheader split while Syracuse moved to 20-15.

Game 1 Recap

Canisius came out of the gates hot, plating all four runs in the top of the first inning.

With a pair of runners on, sophomore
Destiny Falquez doubled to right, plating graduate student Erin Hufford.
Sophomore Gianna Fazzolari singled in second year outfielder Christie McGee-Ross to give the Griffs a 2-0 advantage.

Fifth year
Lindsi Dennis and junior Tiara Johnson doubled Canisius' lead following a sacrifice fly and RBI single, respectively.

Syracuse responded with a run of their own in the home half of the first, and added a pair of runs in the third following a two-run homer off the bat of Neli Casares-Maher.

After giving up the long ball, Ollison kept the Syracuse bats under control, allowing just five batters to reach base in the final 4.2 innings.

Game 2 Recap

Syracuse swung a hot bat in the second game, collecting a total of 13 hits in the mercy-rule shortened contest.

The Orange took a 3-0 lead in the first following a three-run shot from Casares-Maher.

In the next half-inning, Canisius saw a ball go over the wall as well.

Leading off the frame, freshman
Rosie Gomez took a 3-2 pitch and served it over the center field fence, putting the Griffs on the board.

Syracuse's offense came alive in a big way in the fourth as the team plated nine runs to put the mercy rule in effect.

Lindsey Hendrix secured the win for the Orange after setting the Griffs down in order in the top of the fifth.

• Freshman Toria Kover made her first collegiate start in the second game of the twin bill.

• The first game of the doubleheader was the only contest this season where Canisius did not strike out a batter in a game.
