Baseball Defeats St. Bonaventure in Midweek Contest

Ten Canisius hitters combined for 14 base knocks as the Golden Griffins defeated St. Bonaventure, 11-1, in non-conference baseball action at Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field in Olean, N.Y., on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Trevor Henneman drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Junior Mike DeStefano logged a game-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Fellow junior Brennan Chisholm also drove in a pair of runs in the contest.

Sophomore Levi Abbott earned the win for Canisius (15-14) after relieving freshman Aaron Duffy, who lasted four innings in his start. Abbott allowed a pair of runs in his two-inning outing while striking out two.

Kyle Caringi was the losing pitcher for St. Bonaventure (2-21) after yielding four hits and three runs (one earned) while walking three and fanning three in 2.1 innings.

GAME RECAP
Canisius opened the scoring in the first on a throwing error by St. Bonaventure's catcher, enabling DeStefano to score from second. Graduate student Mike Steffan drove in Griffs' second run of the inning with an RBI infield single.

St. Bonaventure trimmed the Canisius lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Matthew Williams.

The first of Canisius' 10 unanswered runs to close out the contest came in the third on a bases-loaded walk by senior Dylan Vincent.

A five-run fifth distanced the Griffs from the Bonnies, 8-1. Following consecutive singles by Steffan and redshirt freshman Josh Niles, Vincent was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Kyle Kush drove in the first run of the frame on an infield RBI single before Henneman brought home two of his three RBI on the day on a two-run, ground-rule double. DeStefano followed Henneman with an RBI single.

Chisholm roped a two-run single up the middle to put Canisius ahead 10-1 in the seventh. In the eighth, Henneman added a sacrifice fly to make it 11-1.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a good day for us on both sides of the ball. The pitching staff competed out of the bullpen filling up the zone. Aaron Duffy, Levi Abbott, Lukas Barry and Justin Guiliano did a good job putting together crisp outings. It was great to get Tyler Greenleaf his first outing and have it be a strong one. No free passes by the staff today was great.

"Offensively, we had a lot of contributors today and guys did a great job of getting on base and cashing in with runners in scoring position. You can see our hitters with more confidence in the box and good things are happening.

"Trevor Henneman has been great for us as of late. He is playing with confidence and doing a great job all around. It's good to see."

GAME NOTES
• Tuesday was the first meeting between Canisius and St. Bonaventure since 2018. It marked the 106th meeting between the two Western New York rivals. Canisius is now 51-53-3 all-time over its Western New York rival and has won eight of its last nine over the Bonnies following the win.
• With the 11 runs Tuesday, Canisius has recorded a double-digit run total in each of its last five games. It is the longest streak with 10-plus runs since a five-game streak from April 8-15, 2018.
• Canisius did not issue a walk in the contest, marking the first time the staff has not issued a walk in a 9-inning contest since April 6, 2019, against Quinnipiac in a 9-2 win.
• DeStefano extended his on-base streak to 29 games, marking the longest by a Griff since Liam Wilson's 57-game streak that spanned the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
• Henneman's three RBI is a career-high for the catcher, besting a two-RBI performance against Niagara in March 2019.
• Chisholm's recorded his first multi-RBI performance with his two-run single.
• Greenleaf made his collegiate debut, striking out two batters in an inning of work.
