Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Marquette Uses Late Run to Defeat Women's Lacrosse

Game Recap
Marquette scored seven goals in the final quarter en route to a 14-9 victory over Canisius in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the Demske Sports Complex Friday evening.

The Golden Griffins (4-1) were led by sophomore Caroline Netti, who recorded a hat trick to post her fourth multi-goal game of the season. Katie Smolensky and Paige Stachura each added a pair of goals and an assist, while Kaitlyn Salce tallied a goal and two assists in the defeat.

Canisius opened the scoring five minutes in as Salce beat the Marquette defense to net her second goal of the season. The Golden Eagles (3-3) responded shortly after with two quick tallies just 30 seconds apart to give Marquette a slight 2-1 advantage at the end of the first frame. The Griffs out-shot Marquette 11-6 in the quarter, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.

The Griffs and Golden Eagles traded goals multiple times during the second quarter in a back-and-forth battle. Senior Megan Hoffman netted the Griffs' second goal of the game off of a feed from Salce in a man-down situation. After another Marquette score, Smolensky set up Netti in front of the net to put the ball past goalkeeper Amanda Rumsey. Stachura and Smolensky would notch goals in the final minute of the half to tie the game at five.

Following the break, Smolensky opened the second-half scoring to give the Griffs a one-goal advantage. The Golden Eagles registered two unanswered goals in a third quarter that featured strong defensive play by both teams.

Marquette's Kyra Lamotte scored three of her five goals on the day in the final frame to put the pressure on Canisius. Goals from Stachura and Netti would keep it close, but the comeback was not enough to take down the Golden Eagles as the Griffs fell, 14-9.

Canisius finished with 33 shots and 12 caused turnovers. Senior Shannon Maroney made seven saves in net for the Griffs.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"I thought we had a lot of opportunities to win the game today, but we didn't capitalize. Our shooting wasn't great and we turned the ball over way too much to win.

"Carol [Caroline Netti] is a great player. She moves really well off-ball and she puts herself in great opportunities to score goals. I think she'll continue to grow and be a really huge player for us.

"Shannon [Maroney] is the leader you dream of coaching. She comes in every single day and works really hard. She's the only goalie on the entire team, but never ever has a complaint about all the shots she faces in practice. She steps up in every single game and gives it everything she's got.

"I think we're in a really tough stretch of our schedule with three really tough games in a row. Binghamton will be another big test for us. There's a lot to learn from this game today, we've got to be cleaner, we've got to be better with our finishing, we can't turn the ball over as much. If we can fix those things, I think we'll go in and give Binghamton a great game."

Game Notes
• Marquette now holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series versus Canisius.

• Smolensky registered her 50th career goal on her first of two goals in Friday's game.
• Maroney recorded seven saves in the defeat, marking the tenth time the senior has posted seven or more saves in her career.
