UAlbany Outpaces Women’s Lacrosse in High-Scoring Affair

Game Recap
Despite Caroline Netti scoring five goals and Megan Hoffman netting a career-high four goals, Canisius was unable to slow UAlbany in a 20-15 loss to the Great Danes Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

UAlbany (2-4) jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the opening quarter. The Great Danes would extend the lead to eight early in the second frame before Skylar McArthur broke open the scoring for Canisius (4-2) with a free-position goal. Netti found Hoffman in front of the net in an attempt to trim the deficit, but the Great Danes would add two more goals in response. Goals from Netti, Hoffman, Kaitlyn Salce and McArthur gave the Griffs some momentum in the second but the Great Danes would take a 13-6 lead into halftime.

The Griffs and UAlbany traded scoring runs in the third quarter. The first Canisius run featured Hoffman's third goal of the game and a beautiful feed from Katie Smolensky to Netti to put the Griffs within six. The Great Danes would answer with three of their own before Riley Davis and Netti tallied goals to close out the third.

Canisius outscored UAlbany 5-3 in the final frame with goals from Netti, Davis, Paige Stachura and Hoffman, but could not come back from the early deficit.

Smolensky paced the Griffs with a career-high six assists. Freshman Sarah Kilburn led Canisius with nine draw controls.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"I think that we kind of dropped the ball in the first quarter. That really is the story of the game. We started off so flat and slow and we had to dig ourselves out of a big hole. If we erase that quarter, great game. Unfortunately, that's not how that goes. So, we'll be working on keeping the intensity from start to finish in our next couple of practices.

"Going that long without a game, it definitely breaks the rhythm and we had to get back into the swing of playing again. It's not an excuse, we should never come out that flat, but it is hard to stay in a rhythm when you had a full week off. That doesn't normally happen in the season.

"Smo [Katie Smolensky] is such an important player for us. She is, first and foremost, a great kid and super fun to coach, but she is an assassin on the field. She wants to score, she wants to get the assist, she wants to make a play every time she touches that ball and that kind of a mentality really makes a big impact on our offense.

"We will have two very intense practices heading into the Youngstown State game. I think we need to really develop the mentality of start to finish. I think against Marquette we had a quarter that wasn't so great and that cost us the game. I think that just happened again to us in this Albany game, so we will have very intense practices to prepare us to go from the start to the finish with a great effort."

Game Notes
Wednesday was the fourth meeting between UAlbany and Canisius. The Great Danes move to 4-0 in the all-time series.
Smolensky recorded a career-high six assists in the contest. Her sister, Lauren Smolensky, holds the single-game record for most assists in a game for the Griffs with nine. Katie's five points in today's matchup puts her 10 points away from the 100-point plateau.
Caroline Netti registered her fifth multi-goal game of the season against the Great Danes. Netti leads the Canisius offense with 19 goals in 2022.
Hoffman, Netti, Smolensky and Stachura have posted at least a point in all six contests to open the campaign.
With four goals today, the duo of Smolensky and Netti has connected to score eight goals this season.
The Griffs' 15 goals mark the most scored in a loss since March 27, 2019 when Canisius fell to Siena in overtime by a score of 17-16.
