Women’s Lacrosse Drops MAAC Home Opener to Niagara

Game Recap
Niagara outscored Canisius, 8-3, in the second half to power past Canisius, 13-12, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Skylar McArthur and Caroline Netti led the Canisius (6-3, 1-1 MAAC) offense with three goals each, while Katie Smolensky netted two and tallied two assists.

The Purple Eagles (6-4, 2-0 MAAC) opened up the scoring three minutes in with two quick goals before Smolensky picked up where she left off last weekend, scoring the Golden Griffins' first goal. Riley Davis evened the score at two in the final minutes of the first quarter.

The second frame featured a plethora of Canisius tallies. The Purple Eagles found the back of the net first before McArthur quickly responded with her first of the day. Niagara would go on a two-goal run, but the Griffs came back hot with a six-goal run of their own to close out the first half.

Caroline Netti began the scoring run off a feed from Smolensky with a little over five minutes remaining in the second. Under a minute later, McArthur tallied again to tie the game at five.

A free-position goal by Paige Stachura would give Canisius its first lead of the day. Ten seconds later, Smolensky won the draw and carried it straight to the net, tallying her 18th of the season.

In the final minutes of the first half, Netti found the back of the net again and Stachura netted her second to extend the Canisius lead to four and give the Griffs a 9-5 advantage at the break.

The Griffs and Purple Eagles traded goals in the third quarter, with Canisius holding a slight 11-9 lead at the end of the frame.

Niagara scored four unanswered tallies in the fourth before Netti got the Griffs on the board with 1:36 left in the game. Canisius was unable to complete the comeback and dropped its first MAAC contest of the season.
