Women’s Lacrosse Rallies Past Manhattan in MAAC Opener

Game Recap
Senior Skylar McArthur netted the game-winning goal, her fifth tally of the day, with just over three minutes remaining to lift Canisius past Manhattan, 14-13, in a thrilling, back-and-forth battle in Riverdale, N.Y. Saturday afternoon.

McArthur and senior Katie Smolensky combined for eight goals, while senior goalkeeper Shannon Maroney registered nine saves, including four crucial stops in the final frame to move Canisius (6-2) to 1-0 in conference play.

Smolensky gave the Golden Griffins an early lead with a goal in the first 30 seconds of the contest. Manhattan (6-4) would answer shortly after before Paige Stachura got on the scoresheet with a free-position goal. A strong defensive effort by the Griffs and a tally from Caroline Netti, assisted by Smolensky, allowed Canisius to extend its lead to 3-1 midway through the opening quarter.

Manhattan strung together two tallies early in the second frame to give the Jaspers their first lead of the day, 5-4. McArthur responded for Canisius, netting her second of the day off a feed from Smolensky to tie the game at 5-all less than a minute later.

The Jaspers responded quickly with a goal of their own before Canisius would go on a 3-0 run. Smolensky recorded her second and third goals of the game while Stachura tallied her second of the contest and 20th of the season. A three-goal run by Manhattan would send the Griffs into the break down one, 9-8.

Sophomore Steph Herrnreiter opened the scoring in the second half with her first of the season. The Jaspers would counter with back-to-back goals, but McArthur had an answer for the Griffs, earning a free-position shot and converting midway through the third quarter.

Smolensky found sophomore Caroline Netti streaking in front of the net and McArthur scored a man-down goal to tie the game at 12 heading into the final frame.

Manhattan found the back of the net first in the fourth quarter before Riley Davis and McArthur scored the last two goals of the game to seal the Griffs' one-goal victory.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"We came up against some adversity today, having Paige (Stachura) get carded out with a significant amount of time left in the game, but we responded well. The offense really shined and got things done in key moments.

"Sky (Skylar McArthur) and Smo (Katie Smolensky) had been practicing so well this week. They're seniors and they know what conference play means. You could see it coming all week in practice that they were going to have a big game.

"We're familiar with Niagara's personnel and I think we know what we need to do to win on Wednesday. It will come down to execution."

Game Notes
• Saturday was the 23rd all-time meeting between Canisius and Manhattan. With the victory, the Griffs hold a 13-10 advantage in the series and have won 12 of the last 13 matchups.
• Canisius has now scored first in six of eight contests this season.
• With the win, the Griffs improved to 5-0 on the road this year, a feat that has never been accomplished before in program history.

• McArthur recorded her eighth career multi-goal performance, tallying five goals in the contest to match her career high set earlier in the season on Feb. 12, against Bucknell.
• The Smo-Carol connection continued to shine Saturday as Smolensky assisted on both of Caroline Netti's goals. The duo has connected to score 10 goals this season.
