USF Powers Way to Win over Softball

Catcher Josie Foreman clubbed two home runs and Vivian Ponn slugged a long ball over her own as the University of South Florida defeated Canisius 8-0 in six innings Sunday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

With the win, USF moves to 27-6 on the year while Canisius slips to 9-9.

The Bulls' offense clicked right away, picking up a run in the first on Ponn's first hit of the game, a double to center.

Foreman slugged her first home run of the day in the second, hitting an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall before Alexis Johns extended the lead to three with a single to right.

Canisius had its best chance to plate a run in the third. Junior Sophia Recrosio reached base on a fielding error and after graduate student Erin Hufford worked a two-out walk, the Griffs had runners on first and second.

Freshman Saige Alfaro extended her hitting streak to load the bases, but the Blue and Gold were unable to bring in a run.

USF doubled its lead in the home half of the third when Foreman hit a solo shot to center and Ponn drove in a pair with a homer to center of her own.

The host Bulls tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the mercy-rule victory.
