Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Youngstown State in Non-Conference Clash

Game Recap
Paige Stachura netted four goals and Skylar McArthur and Riley Davis each added a pair to push the Golden Griffins past Youngstown State, 12-9, Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

Canisius opened up the scoring in the first quarter for the fifth time this season. Sophomore Claire Netti scored the first goal of her collegiate career midway through the first off of a pass from her sister, Caroline Netti.

A few minutes later, sophomore Riley Davis netted her eighth of the season, assisted by Kaitlyn Salce to give the Griffs a 2-0 lead.

The Penguins wouldn't find the back of the net until the final two minutes of the quarter due to a stellar defensive effort by the Griffs and goalie Shannon Maroney.

In the second frame, the Canisius offense struggled to get anything going, despite recording six shots.

Stachura tallied the Griffs' lone goal in the quarter with her first of the contest, as she fired a laser of a shot past Youngstown State's goalkeeper Savannah Clarke.

The Penguins scored late in the second to tie the game, 3-3, heading into the locker room at the break.

The Griffs got things going offensively in the third quarter, registering a trio of scoring runs.

McArthur opened the scoring in the second half, netting her first goal of the game off of a quick feed in front of the net from Katie Smolensky.

Stachura found the back of the net for the second time a few minutes later. Freshman Sarah Kilburn was credited with the assist, the first of her collegiate career.

The Penguins answered back with a goal of their own before Canisius would go on another 2-0 run.

Davis and Stachura tallied again to give the Griffs a 7-4 lead, but Youngstown State would not back down. The Penguins would answer before Stachura and McArthur got on the scoresheet again to close out the third to take a 9-5 advantage into the final frame.

Canisius and Youngstown State traded goals in the fourth to keep things interesting. Smolensky, Caroline Netti and Salce netted goals in the final 15 minutes of play, giving the Griffs seven different goal scorers in the contest.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"Our defense, led by Shannon [Maroney] in cage was absolutely phenomenal today. I'm incredibly proud of the defensive effort we displayed today. From the attacks riding hard down to Shannon, the defensive effort was pure grit.

"The offense took a while to get going, but we really clicked in the second half and moved the ball well. Good ball movement is crucial for our success on offense.

"I'm really happy for Claire [Netti]. She has been practicing incredibly well lately and came out today with relentless effort and determination. She really earned that goal.

"The team has the week off for spring break so the timing is great heading into MAAC play. We're going to have a lot of fun in practice and work hard to prepare for conference play."
