Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops Pair of Games on Friday

Canisius suffered a pair of losses on Friday, falling 3-0 to Ohio State in the morning before having a 6-5 setback against Purdue in collegiate softball action at the USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

With the losses, the Golden Griffins fall to 8-7 on the season while Ohio State and Purdue move to 15-4 and 16-14, respectively.

Game 1 Recap

Buckeye pitcher Allison Smith silenced the Canisius bats in the morning contest, allowing just three hits and a trio of free passes in the seven inning shutout.

Ohio State plated its first run of the game on an RBI double off the bat of Kaitlyn Coffman in the second inning.

The Buckeyes added to their lead in the home half of the fifth thanks to a solo shot from Meggie Otte and an insurance run in the sixth on a single from Coffman.

Canisius had its best chance to cross the plate in the sixth after graduate student
Erin Hufford reached base on a
fielding error and Saige Alfaro followed with an infield single.

Despite having a pair of runners on, Ohio State's defense snuffed out any potential damage.

Hufford was thrown out trying to steal third and sophomore
Gianna Fazzolari lined into a double play, ending the Canisius threat.

Game 2 Recap
Purdue jumped out to an early lead in the second contest of the day for the Griffs, scoring three runs in the opening frame. The Boilermakers extended its lead in the third with an RBI single from Tyrina Jones.

Fazzolari put the Griffs on the board in the fourth, connecting on a two-out single to bring home Alfaro.

Canisius' offense came alive in the sixth when Hufford opened the frame with a single. After stealing second, the fifth year outfielder came around to score on a one-out single off the bat of sophomore
Christie McGee-Ross.

Fazzolari drove in her second run of the game on a sac fly to center that plated McGee-Ross.

Sophomore
Megan Giese capped off the inning with a two-run homer, putting Canisius ahead 5-4.

Purdue responded with a run of their own to tie the game at five and then plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a double to left to secure the walk-off win for the Boilermakers.

Game Notes
• Giese collected her first career home run against Purdue.
With a hit in both games, Alfaro extended her hitting streak to nine games. The freshman now has a hit in 12 of the 15 games to begin her collegiate career.
• Fazzolari picked up her fourth multi-RBI contest of the season against Purdue.
