Baseball Defeats Charleston Southern to Sweep Three-Game Set

Canisius scored the first eight runs of Sunday's non-conference contest over Charleston Southern, aiding the Golden Griffins to an 8-6 victory over the Buccaneers, sweeping the three-game set from Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark in Charleston, S.C.

Sophomore Max Grant, senior Kyle Kush and graduate students Mike Steffan and Gibson Krzeminski each recorded multi-hit performances for Canisius (7-8).

Kush was the lone Golden Griffin with multiple RBI, while Krzeminski and senior Dylan Vincent each scored twice in the contest.

Junior Chris Pouliot earned the victory and freshman Peyton Consigli was credited with his first collegiate save, pitching three shutout innings of relief.

Evan Truitt could not make it out of the second inning for Charleston Southern, allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked a pair of Canisius batters and struck out one.

Zac Robinson was effective out of the bullpen for the Buccaneers, striking out four in his 5.1 innings of relief.

GAME RECAP
Canisius plated five of its eight unanswered runs in the second inning, jumping out to an early lead. All runs in the inning came in five consecutive plate appearances. Freshman Carlin Dick drove in the first run of the contest on a bases-loaded walk that brought Vinny Chiarenza home, who led the inning off with a double. The remaining runs in the frame came on RBI singles by Kush, a sacrifice fly by graduate student Mike Mazzara, a fielder's choice by junior Mike DeStefano and another RBI single by Grant.

Back-to-back doubles by Vincent and Krzeminski put Canisius ahead 6-0 in the third. Kush followed up Krzeminski's RBI double by singling him home.

Grant clubbed a two-out, solo home run in the fourth to give the Griffs an 8-0 advantage.

Charleston Southern responded with a five-run fourth, cutting its deficit to 8-5, behind a trio of RBI singles. The other two runs came on a Canisius fielding error and a groundout.

An RBI single by Ryan Waldschmidt in the sixth trimmed Canisius' lead to 8-6, but Consigli thwarted any comeback attempt as he allowed only two of the 10 batters he faced to reach base.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was another battle for us. We started out making things happen with some help from the sun and continued to apply pressure offensively. Our bullpen combo of Yankowski and Consigli really helped us bridge the gap to the win.

"To get another strong outing from Peyton Consigli is great for us. He is proving to be a consistent guy out of our bullpen that the guys love to play behind.

"A sweep is always great for the team at any point. We need to learn from this weekend on what we can do to continue to be successful and what needs to be improved to help us achieve consistent success. We are proud of the team for never wavering on this trip and getting the job done."
