Nicosia Shines in Softball’s Win

Redshirt senior Emily Nicosia tossed a complete game one-hitter and went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning, as Canisius defeated North Carolina Central, 12-0, in five innings Sunday morning at Bozeman Field in Wilmington, N.C.

The Golden Griffins return to Western New York with an 8-5 record, while the Eagles slip to 2-10 on the campaign.

Once again, Canisius had its offense firing on all cylinders, scoring two or more runs in all five frames.

The Griffs jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a single and RBI groundout from freshmen Rosie Gomez and Emily Ilano.

Adding to their lead in the second, second year Christie McGee-Ross connected on a 2-1 pitch, driving in Abbey Roeser and Destiny Falquez.

Canisius plated three runs in each of the next two innings, giving them double-digit runs for the second consecutive game.

In the third, Nicosia collected her first hit of the day, a double to left field. Junior Sophia Recrosio hit a 2-0 pitch up the middle to add to the Griffs lead, making it a 7-0 ballgame.

Nicosia continued her stellar day at the plate in the next frame, hitting a ball over the right-center wall for a three-run home run, her first collegiate round-tripper.

The Griffs closed out the contest in the fifth, adding a pair of insurance runs. Ilano drove in her second run of the day courtesy of a two-out double and graduate student Lindsi Dennis' single plated Ilano.

In the circle, Nicosia allowed one over the minimum, tossing five shutout innings. The fifth year struck out three, while inducing eight groundouts and three flyouts in her third victory of the campaign.
