Offense Powers Softball to Split in North Carolina

The Canisius softball posted a split of its two contests Saturday at the UNCW Tournament, suffering a 4-1 setback to the host Seahawks in the opener before rebounding for a 14-8 victory over N.C. Central in the nightcap.

With the split, the Golden Griffins now stand at 7-5 on the season. The Seahawks moved to 12-3 while the Eagles dropped to 2-9.

Game One Recap
Canisius held a 1-0 edge thanks to a solo home run from sophomore Gianna Fazzolari in the top of the second before UNCW took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run blast from Knox.

The Seahawks added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of run-scoring singles from Sobataka and Stockton to build a 4-1 cushion.

The Griffs threatened in the top half of the sixth, using a single, error and walk to load the bases with one out. UNCW was able to keep Canisius from cutting into their lead as Gamache retired the next two batters she faced to end the threat.

Gamache picked up the win for the Seahawks as she pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk. She struck out three.

Six players accounted for the six Griffs base hits in the contest, highlighted by Fazzolari's home run in the second inning and doubles from sophomore Megan Giese and junior Sophia Recrosio

Game Two Recap
Canisius held a 2-0 edge after plating a pair of runs in the top of the first thanks to a two-run double from freshman Rosie Gomez, only to see the Eagles respond with seven runs on six hits in the bottom half for the frame to build a 7-2 advantage.

The Griffs responded to the NCCU outburst with a pair of big innings, bringing home three runs on a two-run single from sophomore Christie McGee-Ross and an error in the second before scoring four runs on a wild pitch and a bases-clearing triple from freshman Saige Alfaro to pull back in front, 9-7.

The Eagles pulled with one in the bottom of the third on a solo home run, but Canisius put the game out of reach with a sacrifice fly from graduate student Lindsi Dennis in the sixth and four runs in the seventh on run-scoring doubles from McGee-Ross and Fazzolari and a two-run home run from Gomez to determine the final margin

Gomez went 3-for-3 with four RBI to pace a Canisius lineup that combined for 16 hits in the victory. Alfaro also went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI while McGee-Ross went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
