Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops Both Games of Twinbill to Morehead State

Morehead State swept the Canisius baseball team in its Saturday's doubleheader at Allen Field in Morehead, Ky. The Eagles won the opening game, 4-3, on a walk-off fielding error before taking the nightcap, 5-2.

GAME ONE RECAP
Morehead State won the opening game, 4-3, on a walk-off fielding error with the bases loaded.

Aaron Duffy was sensational in his second start of the season, retiring 12 of the first 14 batters he faced over the opening four innings. Duffy's lone hit surrendered came on a lead-off single in the fourth.

Following a groundout to open the top-half of the third, the next five Canisius batters reached base. Chiarenza hit an opposite field, two-run home run, scoring Grant, to put the first runs on the board. Dylan Vincent added an RBI infield single, giving the Griffs a 3-0 advantage.

The Eagles pitching staff locked in on Canisius' offense, retiring 15 of the final 18 batters they faced. Grant reached base twice – once on a walk and another on a base hit – and Josh Niles recorded a hit in the eighth inning.

A sacrifice fly in the fifth inning was the first time Morehead State would cross home plate before tying the game in the sixth, 3-3. An RBI double by Chase Vinson and an infield single by Nick Gooden set up a double-steal, enabling Vinson to steal home and tie the contest.

All four batters that Morehead State brought to the plate in the eighth reached base, allowing the Eagles to take the victory.

David Yankowski was the losing pitcher for Canisius. He struck out four batters over his two-plus innings on the mound. John Bakke earned the victory for the Eagles after striking out three batters over his 1.2 innings.

GAME TWO RECAP
Morehead State opened a four-run lead in the second inning, after scoring on an RBI single. The Eagles followed the base knock with a run scoring on a fielding error in right field before runs were scored on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice.

Grant hit his second home run of the series in the sixth, crushing a 3-1 pitch to right-center field for a two-run homer, cutting the Eagles' lead in half, 4-2. Grant's blast also plated Carlin Dick, who led the inning off reaching on a fielding error.

Ryley Preece hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to add onto Morehead State's lead, 5-2.

Alex Kafka allowed three hits over his six innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned), walking just one and striking out five. Bakke, after earning the victory in the opening game, was credited with the save.

Levi Abbott pitched four innings for the Griffs, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned), walking three and fanning a pair. Rockne Seidel made his season debut, pitching the final two innings of relief for Abbott.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today we played sloppy and didn't take care of the baseball. When you're only scoring three runs and two runs, you need to do a better job handling the baseball and today we did not. All of the mistakes we made are fixable and we will be able to move forward. We will patch up our wounds and come back hungry to end the weekend on a positive note.

"Max Grant has been a spark plug for us. He doesn't get phased by much of anything and he plays the game free with no fear. His work ethic and results speak for themself.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 15th and 16th all-time meeting between Canisius and Morehead State. The Griffs are now 9-7 all-time over the Eagles after dropping both games.
