USC Upstate Walks Off Softball Monday

Casey Goguts hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to give host USC Upstate a 1-0 victory over Canisius Monday afternoon in the Griffs' final game in Spartanburg, S.C.

Sophomore Megan Giese mowed down the Spartans' lineup through the first six innings of work. Giese tossed 4.1 perfect innings before yielding an infield single to Tiffany Domingue in the fifth. The righty finished the day allowing just three hits, while striking out three batters.

The Griffs best chance to plate a run came in the third inning. Junior Sophia Recrosio opened the frame with a single to left. With one out, graduate student Erin Hufford drove a pitch up the middle, putting runners on first and second. 

Sophomore Christie McGee-Ross moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout, but Canisius was unable to capitalize further. 

Game Notes
• Giese has recorded a win, loss or save in all five appearances this season.
• Canisius hit .291 and had an on-base percentage of .359 over its first six games, collecting 44 hits and 18 extra-base knocks.

Up Next
• Following an off-day Tuesday, Canisius will face UNCW in a pair of games on Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
