Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits Doubleheader Against UNCW

After Canisius defeated UNCW 8-6 in the first game, the host Seahawks walked it off with a 3-2 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Boseman Field in Wilmington, N.C.

With the split, the Golden Griffins moved to 4-4 on the campaign, while UNCW now sits at 9-2 on the season.

Game 1 Recap

Canisius' offense came out hot in the second inning, as the Griffs plated six runs off UNCW starter Kara Hammock.

Sophomore
Gianna Fazzolari opened the frame with a leadoff double before coming around to score on fellow second-year Megan Giese's two-bagger.

With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore
Christie McGee-Ross stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a triple, putting Canisius out in front by five.

Graduate student
Lindsi Dennis capped Canisius' second-inning salvo as she drove home McGee-Ross with a double, the team's third extra-base hit of the inning.

Despite being down six, the host Seahawks quickly made it a ballgame in the bottom half of the frame, plating its first run on a bases loaded hit by pitch.

In the next at bat, catcher Anna Knox connected on a 1-0 pitch, hitting a grand slam to give Canisius just a one-run lead.

The Blue and Gold added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning when freshman
Saige Alfaro hit the team's second triple of the game, bringing home junior Sophia Recrosio and freshman Emily Ilano.

UNCW cut Canisius' lead to two in the sixth with a sac fly, but were unable to get another runner home.

In the circle for Canisius, senior
Alexis Churchill earned her second win of the year, tossing a complete game.

Following the five-run second, the southpaw was able to settle down and allowed just five base runners over the final 5.2 innings.

Game 2 Recap

UNCW plated its first run of the contest in the opening frame when it scored on a wild pitch.

The Griffs tied things at one on an RBI single by Dennis in the third and later grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the fourth thanks to a McGee-Ross bases loaded walk.

The Seahawks knotted the game at two when Lauryn Richardson ripped an RBI triple in the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jentri Meadows opened up the frame with a base hit up the middle before coming around to score the game-winning run on the next play.

Giese threw six strong innings in the no-decision. The sophomore fanned eight batters, yielding just two runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
