Kelly, Richiusa Garner MAAC Weekly Awards

Canisius freshman Colin Kelly and Johnny Richiusa were both recognized as the MAAC announced its TicketSmarter Men's Lacrosse weekly award winners on Monday.

Kelly was tabbed the circuit's Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week while Richiusa was recognized as the inaugural Face-Off Specialist of the Week after both played key roles in the Golden Griffins' 13-11 victory at Bellarmine on Feb. 19.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Kelly tallied five points on four goals and an assist in the victory over the Knights on Saturday. Kelly registered a goal and an assist in the first half before tallying three goals in the second half, including the insurance marker late in the fourth to secure the win.

Leading the team with nine points (7g, 2a) through the first two games of the season, Kelly is the first Canisius freshman since Adam Jones in 2008 to record a hat trick in each of his first two collegiate games.

Richiusa, meanwhile went 17-of-28 at the face-off X during Saturday's victory. The Penfield, N.Y., native won 10 of 14 faceoffs contested in the second half, including 5-of-6 draws taken in the fourth quarter. Richiusa also scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls as he became the first Canisius newcomer to record 15 or more face-off wins in a game since Daniel Balawejder won 15 against Cleveland State on March 4, 2017.

Cansius (1-1) returns to action Tuesday as it takes on Michigan in a 3 p.m. contest at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
