Softball Drops Pair of Sunday Contests

Canisius was defeated by Northern Kentucky and USC Upstate on Sunday in collegiate softball action in Spartanburg, S.C.

In the first game of the day, the Norse (5-5) used a three-run fourth inning to pace their way to a 4-2 victory.


USC Upstate (8-0) ended the game in the fifth after scoring five runs to secure the 8-0 win over the Blue and Gold (3-2) in the second contest.


Game 1 Recap

After allowing a run to score on an error in the second inning, the Golden Griffins were able to tie the contest at one in the top half of the fourth as sophomore Gianna Fazzolari clubbed her fourth home run of the season, tying her home run total from her freshman campaign.

The Norse regained the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame.


With runners on second and third, Sophie Margelot reached first on a fielder's choice, which allowed Charly Koehler to score.


Ella LeMonier dropped down a bunt of her own, bringing home Olivia Pastin for NKU's third run of the game.


In the very next at bat, Jenna O'Hair singled to right to plate Margelot for the third run of the inning.


Canisius trimmed the lead to two when graduate student
Erin Hufford doubled home freshman Saige Alfaro on a ball hit into the left-center gap in the fifth, but the offense was unable to get another runner on base the rest of the game.
 
Game 2 Recap
USC Upstate's pitcher Hannah Houge kept the Griffs offense at bay, fanning 11 Canisius batters. The Blue and Gold were only able to get three hits over the five innings of play in the loss.

The Spartans' got out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of RBI doubles by Celeste DeLorenzo and Summer Johnson in the second and third innings, respectively.


The host team's offense continued its success in the fifth, with six batters reaching base. Madison Lanoux connected on a bases-clearing double with two outs to end the game and give USC Upstate the mercy-rule win.


Game Notes

• Fazzolari hit a home run in four straight games to begin the season; which matched her season total from the 2021 campaign.
• With the start against Northern Kentucky, sophomore Megan Giese appeared in the circle in the first four games.
• Hufford opened the season with at least one base hit in four consecutive games.

Up Next

• Canisius will face USC Upstate on Monday in the final game of the opening series. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
