Hockey Completes Sweep of Sacred Heart with 3-1 Victory

Canisius used goals from three different players and a 29-save effort from junior goaltender Jacob Barczewski to record a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter.

Senior Lee Lapid and graduate students Alex Ambrosio and Jake Witkowski scored the three goals for the Golden Griffins (16-12-3, 13-9-2 AHA), who completed a sweep of the weekend series with Saturday's victory. The victory also secured Canisius a first-round bye and home ice for the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, slated for March 11-13.

Austin Magera accounted for lone goal for the Pioneers (13-15-3, 10-11-2 AHA) while goaltender Justin Robbins made 21 saves.

After a scoreless first, Lapid gave Canisius a 1-0 lead at the 12:35 mark of the second period, collecting the puck from behind the Griffs and skating down the left side before cutting in front of the Sacred Heart goal and stuffing the puck by Robbins for his 11th goal of the season.

Ambrosio doubled the Canisius advantage to 2-0 with less than two minutes to play in the second, deflecting sophomore Jackson Decker's point shot past Robbins from the middle of the slot for his seventh goal of the campaign.

In the third, Witkowski increased the Canisius lead to 3-0 with an empty-net goal with a little more than two minutes to play before Magera spoiled Barczewski's shutout bid by scoring on a deflection with 68 seconds remaining.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Really proud of the effort tonight. It was a really smart hockey game from us. I really liked how we played. Overall, it's a huge weekend for us at home against a really good Sacred Heart team to get six points. I'm proud of the group. Really happy with how we're playing and that will continue.

"It's really nice to have two quality goalies on our roster. Both of them showcased their play this weekend. (John) Hawthorne was excellent last night and Barczewski was excellent tonight. It's definitely a confidence builder for everybody knowing that whoever's in net of those two we have a really good chance to win the hockey game. We know they're going to keep us in it if we're not playing well and we know if we really are playing well, man-oh-man, they're going to be tough to beat. That was the case tonight. Barzo was solid, but our team played really well in front of him. So, it's a great combo when you're playing hard defensively and have really good goaltending.

"Discipline is ultra-important, especially this time of year. We've been able to eliminate a lot of the hooking or slashing-type penalties when we really don't need to. Our guys are very committed to playing our way and that includes having really good discipline and not giving opponents opportunities to get on the power play.  Looking forward to the playoffs, discipline is going to be a major component to our success."
