Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept by Pitt in Saturday Doubleheader

Canisius was defeated by Pitt in both games of its Saturday doubleheader in the Snowbird Classic at Centennial Park in Port Charlotte, Fla., 12-2 and 4-0.

Pitt's offense came to life in the opening game, scoring all of its 12 runs in the first four innings.

In a stark contrast from the opening game, the teams combined for just nine hits in the nightcap as the Panthers shutout Canisius to earn the sweep.

GAME ONE RECAP
Jeffrey Wehler went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI to lead Pitt to its 12-2 victory.

Sky Duff and Tatem Levins each drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers in the game one win.

Pitt plated runs in the first four innings, scoring the first 12 runs of the contest.

Following a leadoff walk by Duff in the first inning, Wehler hit a two-run home run to center field to put the Panthers ahead early. Jack Anderson clubbed a lead-off home run in the second inning, adding to Pitt's advantage.

The bulk of the Panthers' runs came in the third inning, where Pitt scored six runs — five of which came with two outs.

An RBI double by Wehler and an RBI single by Levins gave Pitt a commanding 12-0 lead after the fourth inning.

In his first collegiate plate appearance in the sixth inning, freshman Josh Niles drove home Mike DeStefano with a pinch-hit RBI single, the latter of three straight Canisius base hits. Kenny Dodson followed with a pinch-hit RBI groundout, plating Mike Steffan.

Billy Corcoran earned the victory for Pitt, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings of work while walking a pair of batters in the opening frame.

Sophomore Levi Abbott was saddled with the loss in his first collegiate start. Abbott could not escape the third inning as he surrendered nine runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. He walked seven and struck out three.

GAME TWO RECAP
Offense came at a premium in the nightcap of Saturday's twin bill as Pitt scored the first three runs of the game in the fifth inning.

A two-out RBI single by Duff followed by a two-run home run by Kyle Hess put the Panthers ahead 3-0.

The only other run scored in the nightcap came following a wild pitch on a swinging third strike to Bryce Hulett in the eighth inning. In an attempt to get Hulett out at first base, a fielding error led to Ron Washington Jr. scoring all the way from second base.

Carlin Dick, Max Grant, Vinny Chiarenza, DeStefano and Kyle Kush each recorded hits in the contest for the Golden Grffins. Dick was the lone player with an extra-base hit, recording a two-out double in the third inning.

Freshman Aaron Duffy made his collegiate debut for Canisius, going five innings, allowing four hits and three runs, walking a pair of Pitt batters and also striking out two.

Senior Brett Kochanski struck out four batters in three innings of relief of Duffy.

Pitt's Logan Evans allowed just three hits over his seven innings of work. He walked one and struck out four, including the final three batters he faced. Hayden Summers earned the two-inning save, allowing just one hit and also fanning four Canisius batters.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"In the first game we didn't have it working on the mound or at the plate. We made a lot of early, weak contact and couldn't get anything going offensively. We will learn from today and make our adjustments tonight to be ready to come out and give our best effort tomorrow."

"It was really good to get a quality start out of Aaron Duffy his first time out and a strong appearance out of the bullpen from Brett Kochanski."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday was the 15th and 16th all-time meetings between Canisius and Pitt. With the pair of victories, Pitt is now 13-3 all-time against the Griffs.
• Along with Niles, fellow freshmen Justin Guiliano and Jackson Strong both made their collegiate debuts in the opening game of doubleheader.
• Guiliano relieved Abbott in the third inning, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while walking a pair and fanning one in the opener.
• Strong served as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, drawing a walk in his lone plate appearance.
• Kochanski's four strikeouts are the most since his career-high six punchouts last season at Monmouth (May 15).
