Allen Secures First Win in Women’s Lacrosse Season Opener

Game Recap
The Canisius women's lacrosse team opened its 2022 campaign with a 14-12 victory over Bucknell to give head coach Russell Allen his first win as a Golden Griffin in his 100th career game.

Senior Skylar McArthur paced Canisius (1-0) offensively with five goals and one assist, as seven different players found the scoresheet in the win.

Bucknell (0-1) held an early 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. Goals from McArthur, senior Megan Hoffman, sophomore Riley Davis and junior Paige Stachura would give the Griffs life, sending the teams to the locker room tied 5-5 at the half.

The Bison opened the scoring in the second half but would not see another lead for the remainder of the game. McArthur evened the score at six with her third goal of the game before senior Katie Smolensky found the back of the net to put the Blue & Gold up 7-6 with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter.

Canisius and Bucknell would trade goals for the rest of the quarter, with freshman Sarah Kilburn and sophomore Caroline Netti tallying their first career goals as Griffs.

Stachura scored her second of the contest less than a minute into the fourth quarter to put the Griffs in front, 10-8. McArthur's fourth and fifth goals started a scoring run for the Blue & Gold, with Netti and Davis scoring again to give Canisius its largest lead of the contest, 14-9 with 6:04 remaining in regulation.

The Bison scored three goals in two minutes in an attempt to spark a comeback, but the Griffs' defense and goalie Shannon Maroney (seven saves) stood tall to secure the first win of the season.
