Women’s Lacrosse Tops Robert Morris

Game Recap
Senior Katie Smolensky posted a five-point performance and Caroline Netti recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Canisius women's lacrosse team over Robert Morris, 16-11, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action in Moon Township, Pa.

Canisius (2-0) featured a balanced scoring attack, with nine different goal scorers and six players tallying at least one assist.

Senior Megan Hoffman netted the first goal of the game before Robert Morris (0-2) responded with two to take an early lead in the first quarter. The Griffs answered back by going on a five-goal run, with Smolensky (2), Netti (2) and Kaitlyn Salce all finding the back of the net.

Canisius continued to play strong on both ends of the field in the second quarter. Smolensky opened the scoring at 11:47 with her third of the day and less than a minute later, Paige Stachura found Sarah Kilburn to take a commanding 8-2 lead.

The Griffs went scoreless the rest of the half, while the Colonials broke a nearly 20-minute scoring drought to give Canisius an 8-3 advantage at the break.

The Colonials scored two goals to open the second half, as the Golden Griffins experienced a lengthy scoring drought of their own. Stachura scored on a free-position with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter to spark another scoring run, courtesy of Alexandra Pound, Smolensky and Stachura's second of the game.

Goals from Netti, Hoffman, Riley Davis and Skylar McArthur in the final frame would secure the victory for Canisius. Shannon Maroney had another solid performance in net, making nine saves and collecting a ground ball.

Head Coach Russell Allen's Postgame Comments
"I think the strength of our team is our overall balance. Today our overall team play won us the game.

"RMU runs a strong zone defense, so we really wanted to attack it with aggressive ball movement. Sharing the ball allowed us to have nine goal scorers and seven assisted goals. That's huge for us and something I'm really proud of.

"Every game is a chance to grow for us. Our first mid-week game [Wednesday] will prepare us for the quick turnaround we will have once we get into MAAC play."
