Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Surge From Manhattan Dooms Women's Basketball on the Road

Manhattan outscored Canisius, 26-17, in the fourth quarter to complete a second-half comeback and defeat the Golden Griffins, 73-68, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Draddy Gymnasium in the Bronx.

Leading the way for Canisius (5-7, 2-1 MAAC) was junior Dani Haskell who finished the game with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting. In the first quarter alone, the Franklinville, N.Y. native had 10 points while going 4-of-6 from the field. Graduate student Vannessa Garrelts added in 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss.

MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Dee Dee Davis paced the Jaspers (5-7, 2-1 MAAC) with a game-high 28 points. Bella Nascimento added in 16 points of her own while Brazil Harvey-Carr chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.

Trailing by nine with 7:03 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Jaspers rattled off 10 unanswered points over the next 3:39 to turn the tide on Canisius and take a slim 61-60 lead with 3:11 remaining. After a 1-for-2 trip at the free-throw line for freshman forward Sisi Eleko, Haskell would drain a 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining, giving the Griffs a one-possession lead, 64-61.

Manhattan would tie the game 25 seconds later off a Bella Nascimento 3-pointer before back-to-back trips at the free-throw line from Davis gave Manhattan a 68-64 advantage with 38 seconds to play.

Haskell would again cut into the Jasper lead with a 3-pointer on the Griffs' next possession to make it a 68-67 contest. Manhattan would seal the comeback victory from the charity stripe, however, knocking down five of its final six tries from the line to determine the five-point margin of victory.

Earlier in the game, the Griffs and Jaspers were tied 15-all with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter before sophomore guard Elia Paez would help break the deadlock with a spin to the basket to give Canisius their first lead of more than one point, 17-15. A Haskell layup with less than 30 seconds remaining in the opening frame put the Blue and Gold in front, 19-16, after ten minutes of action.

For the second consecutive game, Canisius limited an opponent to less than ten points in a quarter as they held Manhattan to eight points on 4-of-12 (.333) shooting in the second frame.

The Griffs found offense early in the stanza, using an 8-0 run over 2:25 to take a 27-20 lead propelled by two layups apiece from Eleko and Haskell.

Manhattan would answer with a pair of baskets from Davis, but two late layups from junior Giana Hernandez-Boulden and freshman Chloe Chard Peloquin sent the Griffs into the locker room with a 34-24 advantage.

Manhattan started the second half on fire, going on a 9-3 run over the opening 3:03 of the third quarter before taking advantage of an 11-4 spurt later in the period to grab a 44-43 edge over the Griffs with 2:45 remaining in the frame.

A driving layup by Garrelts at the 2:28 mark of the third halted Manhattan's second run of the quarter and sparked the Griffs to score eight of the next 10 points and regain their lead, 51-47, entering the final quarter.

The Griffs momentum from the third quarter carried over into the opening stages of the fourth as the Blue and Gold started the frame on a 9-4 run, led by five points from Garrelts, to maintain a 60-51 lead and setting the stage for the Jaspers comeback.
