Hockey Finishes Non-Conference Play with Loss at Maine

Maine used goals from three different players and a 22-save shutout from Victor Ostman to post a 3-0 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

Cole Hanson and Jakob Sirota both found the back of the net during power-play opportunities for the Black Bears (6-8-1), who capitalized on two of their three chances with the man advantage as they won their fourth straight contest. Lynden Breen rounded out the Maine scoring with an empty-net tally in the final minute of the third.

Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski finished with 23 saves between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (5-11-2), who were 0-for-5 with the man advantage, including a five-minute major opportunity to start the third period.

In the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs, Maine opened the scoring just before the midway point of the contest with a power-play goal as Hanson fired a turn-around shot from the middle of the slot that beat Barczewski inside the right post.

Sirota doubled the Black Bears advantage to 2-0 on the power play at the 8:06 mark of the third period, firing a wrist shot over the glove of Barczewski from the top of the slot for his third of the campaign.

Breen closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute, creating a turnover at the top of the defensive zone and out-skating the Canisius defense before firing he puck into the vacant cage.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Post Game Comments
"I'm proud of the effort. There are no excuses. We're not in this business for moral victories. We came to Maine to win the game. We didn't do that, so were leaving pissed off and disappointed. We need to improve special teams. That will give us a better chance to win and it was the difference tonight.

"But when I reflect upon about the prep that it took this week. When I think about the sacrifices that were required to play the way we did tonight, I am extremely proud and excited to see what this group is going to do in the second half of the season. We had guys who have not gotten a lot of playing time in the lineup due to necessity, we had a goalie dressed as a skater in case we needed them to serve a penalty in a strategic move. Today's game required sacrifice from everybody. I asked guys to empty the tank tonight and they definitely did that. Guys were getting off the ice the way you're supposed to after a hard hockey game.

"This was the best part of our game tonight. It's the right question to ask. Was there an individual effort that was above and beyond and my answer is absolutely not. We had guys in situations they haven't been in. With Oliver Tarr, our expectations are very high for him. We expect him to have six shots and more in a game. Christian MacDougall hasn't played much college hockey and he played a lot tonight and did very well. But those guys are not alone in their effort. Every guy that wore the Blue and Gold tonight gave us everything they had at all times. That was a team effort. I wish I could call it a team effort that earned us a victory. Tonight, it didn't get us that. We got some work to do. But, man-oh-man, there are some things from this game that will drive us forward, because it was one of those games that we will remember."
