Late Goal Dooms Hockey at Sacred Heart

Marcus Joughin scored with 5:15 remaining in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lift Sacred Heart to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Todd Goehering and Neil Shea also scored for the Pioneers (5-2-0, 5-1-0 AHA), who completed the weekend sweep with the two-goal victory. Luke Lush recorded 23 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Freshman Hunter Andrew scored the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (2-7-0, 0-2-0 AHA). Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski finished with 24 saves.

The teams traded power-play goals during the first period. Goehring gave Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead just 4:35 into the contest as he finished off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence by sliding the puck past the right leg of Barczewski to open the scoring.

Andrew brought the Griffs level just seconds before the 11-minute mark of the first period when he jammed home a loose puck from just off the left post after senior David Melaragni's attempt from the top of the point was turned aside by Lush.

The game remained tied until late in the third period, when Joughlin finished off a 2-on-1 rush by chipping the puck over the right leg of Barczewski to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.

Shea put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation.
