Women’s Soccer Earns MAAC Championship Berth With 1-1 Draw at Manhattan

Freshman Mia Iacona scored her second goal in as many contests to pace Canisius in a 1-1 draw versus Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

With the tie and Iona's loss to Siena, the Golden Griffins (5-4-8, 3-2-5 MAAC) have earned a berth into the 2022 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship tournament field after finishing the conference portion of their regular-season schedule with 14 points. The Blue and Gold's postseason seed, postseason opponent, game date and game location will be known after the final day of MAAC contests, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Ianah Mackey accounted for the lone goal for the Jaspers (3-7-4, 1-5-3 MAAC), while Audrey Johnstone finished with four saves in goal for the home team.

Iacona gave Canisius a 1-0 lead at the 11:57 mark of the contest when she placed a shot into the lower right-hand corner of the net from the middle of the box for her second goal in as many games.

Mackey brought Manhattan level in the 26th minute as she redirected a cross from Julia Nicholas into the back of the Griffs goal to knot the score at 1-1.

Despite holding Manhattan without a shot during the second half, Canisius was unable to put one past Johnstone. The Griffs best chance to take the lead came off the foot of junior Tiani Fonoti in the 81st minute, but her shot from the middle of the box was just over the crossbar.

Game Notes
• This marks the first time Canisius has earned a berth into the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship field since 2016. The Griffs last played in the league's postseason tournament in 2017 when all 11 MAAC schools qualified for the league tournament at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
• Saturday's game served as the 31st meeting between Canisius and Manhattan. The teams played to a draw for just the third time in those 31 matchups and the first since their meeting during the 2009 campaign.
• Canisius out-shot Manhattan by a 15-2 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 10-0 edge in the second half.
• The Griffs attempted three of the four corner kicks awarded in the contest.
• Only three of Canisius' 11 starters – senior Abby Molloy, junior Jessica Jones and sophomore Emma Oliphant – played the full 90 minutes on Saturday.
• Oliphant led all players with four shot attempts on Saturday.
