Women’s Soccer Defeats Marist in Home Finale

Freshman Mia Iacona scored the lone goal of the contest in the 30th minute and junior Jessica Jones posted her fifth shutout of the season to pace Canisius in a 1-0 victory over Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Golden Griffins (5-4-7, 3-2-4 MAAC) improved their postseason positioning by moving into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings, three points clear of fifth-place Iona and four points in front of sixth place with two game days remaining in the regular season.

Natalie Kelchner made three saves in goal for the Red Foxes (4-5-5, 2-4-2 MAAC).

Iacona gave the Griffs a 1-0 lead at the 29:03 mark of the contest when she collected a pass from junior Erin Weir just outside the box and struck a turnaround shot that went past a diving Kelchner and into the right side of the net for her first collegiate tally.

Both teams had opportunities to get on the board in the second half that found the woodwork. Junior Tiani Fonoti and sophomore Emma Oliphant took chances to double the Griffs advantage less than two minutes apart during the middle stages of the frame, but both of their shots hit the crossbar.

Amanda Caldarelli authored Marist's best chance to get on the scoreboard during the 80th minute, but her shot from inside the box found the right post and stayed out.
