Women’s Soccer Sees Unbeaten Streak Snapped in Setback to Stags

Maddie Mills tallied a goal and an assist to lead Fairfield to a 2-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women' soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports
Complex.

Mills opened the scoring in the third minute and registered the primary assist on Angela Filoasa's game-winning marker in the 42nd minute to pace the Stags (12-3-0, 7-1-0 MAAC) as Fairfield took over sole possession of first place with their win and Quinnipiac's loss at Iona on Saturday.

Sophomore Sophia Konstantinou accounted for the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (4-4-7, 2-2-4 MAAC), who saw their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end with Saturday's setback.

Playing in windy conditions, Mills opened the scoring a little more than two minutes into contest when her free kick just inside the midfield stripe eluded Canisius junior keeper Jessica Jones and found its way into the goal.

The Stags doubled their margin at the 41:19 mark of the contest when Mills played a corner kick towards the back post, where Filosa was able to get her head on it and direct into the Canisius cage for her first of the campaign.

Konstantinou would cut the Griffs deficit in half in the 71st minute, taking advantage of the wind to play a free kick from the Canisius half of the field into the box, where Fairfield keeper Katie Wright was able to get a piece of it, but was unable to stop it from crossing the goal line, making it a 2-1 contest.

Canisius turned up the pressure in the final minutes, but Wright was up to the task, making a pair of saves in the final minutes to preserve the Fairfield lead.
