Women’s Soccer Continues Streaks with Scoreless Draw at Iona

The Canisius women's soccer team extended both its unbeaten and shutout streaks on Wednesday as it played to a 0-0 draw at Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
With the draw, the Golden Griffins (4-3-7, 2-1-4 MAAC) continued their active unbeaten streak that now stands at five games (1-0-4). The shutout also helped Canisius establish a program mark for longest consecutive shutout streak. The Griffs have not allowed a goal against in the last 527:32 of game action, dating back to the first half of their contest against Quinnipiac on Sept. 24.  
 
Junior keeper Jessica Jones continued her stellar play between the pipes for Canisius, making four saves to post her fourth consecutive shutout. Emma Havrilla finished the game with five stops in goal for the host Gaels (7-4-4, 2-3-1 MAAC).
 
The best chance of the first half for either team came in the 32nd minute when sophomore Erin Weir played a ball into the box that bounced over the head Havrilla, but she was able to get back into position and clear the ball off the goal line with her left hand in a diving effort.
 
In the second half, junior Tiani Fonoti found herself unmarked in the middle of the box in the 65t minute, but her shot attempt sailed just over the crossbar and out of play.
 
Sophomore Emma Oliphant also had a chance to get the Griffs on the board in the 77th minute, but her header rang off the left post and back into play.
 
Jones made her best save of the game in the final minutes of regulation as the Gael's Kiera Haggerty got a shot off from inside the box that Jones made a diving effort to keep out of the net and preserve the draw.
 
Game Notes
• Wednesday's contest served as the 35th meeting between Canisius and Iona. The draw was just the fifth in series history between the two programs and the first since the 2018 season.
• Canisius out-shot Iona by a 15-10 margin for the contest, highlighted by an 8-5 edge in shot attempts during the first half.
• Both teams attempted four corner kicks in the contest.
• Jones became just the second keeper in program history to record four consecutive shutouts and the first since Lesley Ivinac posted four-straight clean sheets during the 2010 season.
• The Griffs active shutout streak of 527:32 surpassed the previous program standard of 465:41, set over the final five games of the 2010 season.
