Late PK Lifts Mount St. Mary's Over Men's Soccer

A penalty-kick goal by Mount St. Mary's Ondrej Soukup in the game's 83rd minute proved to be the difference, as the visiting Mountaineers scored a 2-1 victory over Canisius in MAAC men's soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

The win, which ended Mount St. Mary's two-game losing skid, improved the Mountaineers to 5-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-5-3, 0-2-0 in MAAC action with the defeat.

With a little less then 8:00 remaining in the contest, Mount St. Mary's was able to play a ball into the box, where Canisius was whistled for a foul, setting up the penalty-kick opportunity for Soukup. The graduate student from the Czech Republic was able to beat Canisius goalkeeper William Howard with a shot to the lower left-corner of the net to give Mount St. Mary's the 2-1 lead.

Canisius got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the game's 33rd minute after freshman Daniel Longo redirected a corner-kick from teammate Jonny Tekie past Mount goalkeeper Ethan Russell. The goal for Longo marks the first of his collegiate career, while the assist was the first of the season for Tekie. Mount St. Mary's wasted little time evening the score, as the Mount knotted the game at 1-1 just 1:49 later after Raul Luna scored an unassisted marker for the visiting team.

Russell earned the win in goal for the Mountaineers after he made four stops on the day. Canisius held a 12-5 advantage in shots in the game and the Griffs also had nine corner kicks, against just three for Mount St. Mary's.
