Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Defeated by Iona

Despite out-shooting Iona 15 to 11 and creating numerous offensive opportunities throughout the contest, Canisius fell short, losing 1-0 to the Gaels Saturday afternoon in MAAC women's soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Gaels moved to 5-4-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in conference play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 0-7-2 and 0-2-0 in MAAC action.

Iona's Faith Preziosi claimed the lone goal in the fourth minute of the match, kicking
the ball towards the left side of the goal from just outside the box, unintentionally bouncing it off the left goal post and into the back of the net.

Canisius had its best chance to find the back of the net with a nearly perfect sequence following an awarded corner kick in the 10th minute of the contest.

After freshman
Erin Weir put the ball into the goal box, sophomore Tiani Fonoti put a perfect strike onto the right side of the net where an Iona defender made the save. Senior Luca Fahmer collected the rebound and fired it to the left side of the cage, where another Iona defender kept the Griffs off the scoreboard with a goal line stop.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"Obviously disappointing to get the loss, but there were certainly some positives, similar to the previous game. We are creating chances, we definitely controlled the tempo, but you win games by scoring and we have to find ways to put the ball in the back of the net."

Game Notes
• Saturday's match served as the 33rd meeting between Canisius and Iona.
• Fonoti had three more shots on goal in the loss, giving her 16 on the season.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Jones made five saves in the match, marking the third consecutive game she has made five or more stops.
• Canisius out-shot Iona, 15-11, and also put eight shots on goal, compared to the Gaels six.
