Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pair of Second Half Goals Lift Saint Francis Above Men’s Soccer

Patrick Heron and Elie Lubino scored both of Saint Francis' goals in the second half as the Red Flash defeated Canisius, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action at a sun-drenched Demske Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Saint Francis outshot the Griffs in the first half, 13-1, as Canisius' lone attempt was on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

In the 18th minute, Saint Francis nearly opened the scoring as a cross was headed into the goal, but was waved off due to an offside call.

Alessio Atzori eventually opened the game's scoring in the 43rd minute, netting his second goal of the season after Federico Mereto drew a foul inside the 18-yard box.

Atzori's right-footed penalty kick strike went in the opposite direction of Saint Francis' goalkeeper, Jonas Dieseler, getting sent into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Saint Francis tied the game in the 64th minute as Patrick Heron's deposited a feed from Jeff Thielman behind Canisius goalkeeper William Howard from the middle of the box.

Seven minutes later, Lubino received a pass from Dallan Schoenberger in transition and beat Howard with a shot inside the left post to give the Red Flash the lead.

Alex Cadena Jr. and Dylan Rice had two shot attempts for the Griffs in the final 15 minutes of action, but neither were on goal.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments

"I thought our performance today was much better than our previous game, but we have to start finding a way to win these close games."
