Women’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Manhattan in MAAC Opener

Julia Nicholas scored her second goal of the day with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Manhattan to a 2-1 victory over Canisius in the opening game of MAAC women's soccer conference play Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Nicholas and the Jaspers moved to 5-1-0 on the year with the come-from-behind victory while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-6-2 overall.

The Golden Griffins' controlled the tempo for the majority of the game, creating numerous chances on Manhattan goalkeeper Kim Mains.

Canisius opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match when it was awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box was called on the Jaspers. Sophomore Tiani Fonoti connected, striking it in the bottom corner past the diving Mains for her second goal of the season.

Manhattan tied the contest in the 36th minute when Nicholas netted her first goal of the match. After receiving the pass from Sydney Harwood on the right side of the box, Nicholas turned and put the ball into the top left corner of the net.

Seconds before the match was heading to overtime, Nicholas netted her second of the game, racing downfield and collecting the ball on the right side before striking a shot that found its way into the top right corner to give the Jaspers the victory.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"I think if we took our chances when we had them, the result would have been a little different. We wanted to focus on being better with the ball and I think we showed that today. When we are taking over the game, we need to capitalize and take our chances."
