Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cornell Shuts Out Women’s Soccer

Cornell used a pair of close-range goals to post a 2-0 victory over Canisius Friday at Berman Field in Ithaca, N.Y.

The win gave the Big Red a victory in its season debut while Canisius dropped to 0-2-1 on the year with the setback.

Cornell freshman Payton Nichols tapped in a cross-goal pass from sophomore Sophie Weeter in the 63rd minute to open the scoring.

The Big Red netted their second goal of the match in the 84th minute when Naomi Jaffe squeaked past the Canisius defenders before putting the ball past the diving Canisius goalkeeper,
Jordan Spencer.

Canisius' best chance in the match came in the 74th minute. With Cornell up one, the Blue and Gold nearly tied the contest when they were awarded a free kick. Freshman
Erin Weir put the ball on net, but it hit off the crossbar and returned to the pitch to end the threat.

Spencer made the start in goal for the Griffs, making a pair of saves in 90 minutes of action. Cornell goalkeeper Erica Fox made two stops to earn the clean slate for the Big Red

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments

"Despite the loss, there are a lot of positives for us to take from tonight's game. We hit the crossbar and created some quality scoring opportunities against strong opposition. This definitely gives us a lot to build upon moving towards Sunday's game."

• Friday's game was the sixth meeting between the Griffs and Big Red.
