Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Opens Season with Draw Versus St. Bonaventure

Sophomore keeper Jessica Jones made four saves to pace Canisius in a 0-0 draw versus Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in collegiate women's soccer action Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, the Golden Griffins out-shot the Bonnies by a 17-5 margin, but were unable to find the back of the net as the teams played to a scoreless draw for the first time in series history. St. Bonaventure keeper Chiara Gottinger recorded eight saves for the visitors from Olean.

The best chance for either team to score in the first half came in the sixth minute when graduate student
Shauna Lee found herself alone in the middle of the box with a loose ball, but her shot slid just past the outside of the left post to keep the game scoreless.

Canisius once again threatened in the 58th minute, as freshman
Emma Oliphant was able to get a shot off in transition from just outside the box that Gottinger was able to keep out of the cage with a diving effort.

Sophomore
Tiani Fonoti had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds of regulation, but her shot from 20 yards out sailed just over the crossbar, sending the game to overtime.

SBU had its best chance to get on the board in the opening minute of the first overtime session when Clare Davis was able to get off a turn-around attempt from point-blank range, but Jones smothered the attempt to extend the contest.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments

"I really like how we came out in the second half. We really started coming into a rhythm. With it being our first actual game, it's going to take a bit of time, but you can see they're starting to get more comfortable with each other and start to execute."
