Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Falls to Fairfield

Fairfield scored three goals in the opening 16:07 of the contest to take control early and cruise to a 6-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

Gabby Diodoti scored two goals and Elle Scott finished with a goal and an assist for
the Stags (2-1-1, 2-1-1 MAAC). Maddie Kiely and Ally Filipkowksi also added individual markers for the visitors.

Freshman Sophia Chelini recorded her first collegiate tally and senior Magdalen Canitia added an assist while freshman Jessica Jones made four saves in goal for the Golden Griffins (1-5-0, 1-5-0 MAAC).

Kiely staked the Stags to a 1-0 lead at the 6:37 mark of the contest, curling a shot just inside the left post from the top of the box.

Diodoti doubled the Fairfield margin to 2-0 in the 13th minute, putting home a rebound after Scott's initial attempt from close range hit the right post.

Scott extended the Stags margin to 3-0 with her first of the campaign, tracking down a loose ball in the box before depositing it into the back of the Canisius net from 12 yards out.

A Canisius own goal in the 26th minute and a penalty kick from Diodoti in the 35th minute stretched the Fairfield margin to 5-0 before the halftime break.

The teams traded goals less than a minute apart on a pair of corner kicks late in the second half to close out the scoring.

Filipkowski made it a 6-0 contest at the 79:13 mark of the contest while Chelini got the Griffs on the board just 51 seconds later, heading home a corner kick from Canitia to determine the final five-goal margin.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"It was definitely a tale of two halves today. We started too slow and really did not look as interested as we should have early on. One thing we've prided ourselves on this season is being competitive and staying in games and that's something we did not do well enough in the first half. I was proud of the reaction in the second half, but again, it was too little, too late.

"I liked the resilience we showed in the second half. When you go in down five-nil at halftime, it would have been easy for them to throw the towel in and feel sorry for themselves, but they certainly reacted the way we wanted them to. There were definitely some positives to take from that second half. Now we turn our focus to the next game."

Game Notes
• Saturday's contest served as the 10th meeting between Canisius and Fairfield. The Stags increased its lead in the all-time series to 7-3 with Saturday's victory.
• Fairfield out-shot Canisius by a 12-8 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 10-2 advantage int the first half.
• The Stags attempted five of the eight corner kicks awarded in the contest.
• Chelini is the third different Canisius player to score her first career goal this season (sophomore Jen Romero and freshman Tiana Fotini).
