Women's Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale at Niagara

Game Recap
Freshman Tiani Fonoti scored twice for Canisius women's soccer team, but it was not enough, as the Golden Griffins fell 6-3 to long-time rival Niagara to end the 2021 spring regular-season schedule at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y., Tuesday night.

With the loss, Canisius ends the spring slate with a 1-6-0 record, while Niagara moves to 2-1-0.

Niagara took an early 1-0 lead in the game's 6th minute, but the Griffs evened the score 1:20 later when Fonoti scored the first of her two goals on the night. Her first marker, her second of the season, came in the game's 8th minute off an assist from senior Magdalen Canitia. That score would stand for a better part of the rest of te first half before Niagara took a 2-1 lead in the game's 32nd minute on a goal by Djeynaba Thiam.

For the second time in the opening frame, Fonoti knotted the score, this time at 2-2, as she scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the game's 43rd minute. The two teams would go into the intermission tied at 202, despite Niagara holding a 13-6 advantage in shots.

Niagara took a 3-2 lead just a little over 7:00 into the second half, but once again, the Griffs tied the game up a short-time later. Senior Shauna Lee scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Canitia in the game's 55th minute. However, that would be Canisius' last goal of the night, as Niagara tacked on three more scores in the contest's final 30:00.

Canisius freshman Jessica Jones made a season-high nine saves for the Griffs, who were out-shot 29-10 for the contest, with Niagara sending 15 shots on frame against Canisius' seven. Niagara also recorded seven corner kick chances in the victory.

Game Notes
• Tuesday's game was the 51st all-time meeting between the two schools. Niagara leads the series 27-19-5.

• Fonoti's two-goal performance marks the first time a Canisius player has scored twice in a game since Madeline Beaulieu tallied two goals against St. Bonaventure on Sept. 2, 2018.
• Canitia's two-assist night is a career-high for the senior.
