Men’s Soccer Falls Short Against Manhattan

Brandon Joseph-Buadi scored a pair of goals for Manhattan, aiding the Jaspers to a 4-2 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action from Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y., on Saturday evening.

Moritz Riegel and Olsen Aluc were the other goal scorers for the Jaspers (2-2-0, 2-2-0 MAAC).

Jo Preci scored a pair of late second-half goals for the Griffs (0-5-0, 0-4-0 MAAC).

Joseph-Buadi opened the game's scoring in the 20th minute, receiving a feed from Oswald Annang. The goal scorer streaked up the left side of the pitch before putting a strike to the right side of Canisius goalkeeper Tom Crosbie.

Nearly eight minutes later, Riegel would net the Jaspers' second goal of the half on a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

Canisius' only shot on target in the first half came off a header from Inder Thind early in the 35th minute that Manhattan goalkeeper Danny DiMarco stopped.

Joseph-Buadi's second goal of the contest came in the 51st minute, putting a diagonal pass from Lucas Cyriacus into the lower right part of the goal.

Exactly 2:30 after Joseph-Buadi's goal, Aluc netted his first collegiate score, as his shot deflected off a Canisius defender and into the net.

Crosbie made a pair of saves in nine seconds in the 69th minute, preventing Aluc from his first career multi-goal game.

DiMarco was handed a red card in the 78th minute, resulting in Manhattan having to play the remaining 11 minutes with only 10 men on the pitch.

A minute after Manhattan's booking, Canisius had a pair of scoring opportunities off a free kick but Manhattan defenders blocked both.

Preci would score both of Canisius' goals late in the second half in a span of 3:21. The first goal was a 20-yard strike in the 83rd minute before the Italian lasered a strike from 30 yards out, using the crossbar to his advantage in the 86th minute.

Canisius out shot Manhattan in the second half, 10-6, with eight of their 10 shots in the half coming after the Jaspers' red card. The Griffs had the advantage in shot attempts for the match, 12-10. Despite having the edge in shot attempts, Manhattan had more shots on target for the game, 6-4.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments

"We didn't make many mistakes today but we were punished every time. Despite the result, I was proud of the way our guys battled and fought hard for the full 90 minutes. Our performance in the last 20 minutes of the game was the best we have played so far this season."

Game Notes

• Saturday's meeting was the 30th between the two New York schools, with Manhattan improving its record over Canisius to 14-12-4.

• Preci's pair of second-half goals was the first multi-goal performance since Oct. 10, 2018, when Troy Brady logged a brace in a home match against "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara.
• Preci's four-point day is a new career high for the junior and is the first time a Griff had three-plus points since Brady had a goal and assist against Saint Peter's on Oct. 12, 2019.
