Women’s Lacrosse Caps Off Regular Season with Victory at Iona

Game Recap
The Canisius women's lacrosse team concluded the regular season Saturday with a 18-8 victory over Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins offensive attack was well-balanced, as the Blue and Gold saw 10 different players find the back of the net in the win. Canisius (2-7, 2-7 MAAC) was paced offensively by hat tricks from Marissa Malvaso, Miranda Malvaso, Riley Davis and Paige Stachura. On the defensive end, senior goaltender Lauren Gilbert finished the contest with a game-high 12 saves in the cage.

The Gaels (1-9, 1-9 MAAC) were led offensively by three-goal performances each from Emily Stewart and Sara Stewart.

Canisius took the first lead of the game just over a minute into the contest and never surrendered the scoring edge throughout the entire matchup. Two goals from Marissa Malvaso and a score from Katie Smolensky gave the Griffs a 3-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the game. Iona found the back of the net for its first score of the day with 20:06 remaining in the opening frame to make it 3-1.

The Blue and Gold responded with their second 3-0 scoring run courtesy of a goal each from Kaitlyn Salce, Davis and Stachura to expand the lead to 6-1 with 10:07 in the half. The Griffs would continue their stellar play heading into the half behind a 4-2 spurt, building 10-3 cushion at intermission.

Canisius extended its lead to as many as 12 in the second half as it held a 17-5 over the Gaels with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. The teams traded goals in the final minutes, with Canisius taking the regular-season finale by a final score of 18-8.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"We came out and competed extremely well from the opening whistle. We had energy from every single player and everyone bought in and was locked into our game plan. I am proud of the complete team effort.

"The biggest thing today is we found our rhythm offensively and that was important. In the past couple of games, we have struggled to find the back of the net. I thought we recognized our opportunities today and capitalized on them. Defensively, once again, I thought we were dialed into our game plan and executed. We came up with numerous defensive stops that our offense capitalized with. Lauren Gilbert had a solid day between the pipes, coming up with some crucial saves.

"The biggest thing leading into postseason play is that we continue to get better this week all over the field. We need to have another important week of practice where we work to see improvement and focus on Canisius lacrosse."

Game Notes

• Canisius remains undefeated in the all-time series with the Gaels, leading 16-0.
• With her first goal of the afternoon, senior Marissa Malvaso posted her 100th career point. Malvaso became the 20th Golden Griffin in program history to eclipse the century mark in points for her career.
• Saturday's 18-goal performance by Canisius was the most goals scored by the Blue and Gold since April 26, 2017, when the Griffs defeated Niagara, 18-9.
• The victory was the first time since April 15, 2017 that Canisius has had four players record hat tricks in a contest.
• Malvaso's six-point showing ties a career-high for the senior. She is the first Griff to post five or more points in a contest since Katie Smolensky's seven-point showing against St. Bonaventure last spring.
