Women’s Lacrosse Season Comes to End in MAAC Quarterfinals

Game Recap
The Canisius women's lacrosse season came to an end Saturday afternoon versus Siena, 21-11, in the 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinal round Saturday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Senior Marissa Malvaso and junior Katie Smolensky led the Golden Griffins (2-8, 2-7 MAAC) with three goals each. Senior Miranda Malvaso and junior Skylar McArthur accounted for two goals apiece, while freshman Riley Davis rounded out the Blue and Gold's scoring with a tally in the goal column.

The No. 2 seed Saints (10-2, 9-2 MAAC) were led by Nicole McNeely's five goals, while four Siena teammates each posted a hat trick for the victors. With the win, Siena advances to face third-seeded Monmouth in the tournament's semifinal round on May 6.

Smolensky opened the scoring than two minutes into the matchup, but Siena answered back with four straight goals to take a 4-1 advantage with 22:36 remaining in the opening half. The Griffs responded behind a free-position goal from Marissa Malvaso, but the Saints would match the Canisius goal just forty second later.

Siena took control of the contest moments later, as a pair of tallies just 50 seconds apart sparked a 13-3 run that stretched into the early stages of the second half and gave the Saints a commanding 18-6 advantage.

Canisius attempted to get back into the contest, answering the Saints stretch with five unanswered goals of its own to trim the deficit to seven, 18-11. The Griffs were unable to continue the momentum built early in the half, however, as Siena would notch the last three goals of the game to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
