Softball Rolls Past Quinnipiac for Two Wins

The Canisius softball team pounded out 25 hits over two games and the team's two starting pitchers each earned a complete-game victory as the Golden Griffins swept Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon in MAAC softball action Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

Canisius scored a 4-1 victory in the first game before rolling past the host Bobcats, 13-1, in five innings in game two.

With the sweep on Saturday, Canisius improved to 14-9 on the season, while Quinnipiac slipped to 7-19 with the pair of losses.

GAME ONE
Scoring did not get underway for either team until the top of the second inning. With two outs on the board, senior Sue Vi singled to first base before swiping second to put herself into scoring position. With a single by fellow senior Erin Hufford, the Griffs struck first to make it a 1-0 game.

The Griffs picked up right where they left off in the top of the third, when the top of the lineup produced three hits in a row, highlighted by the first of two doubles in the game off the bat of freshman Gianna Fazzolari. The final of the three hits, senior Lindsi Dennis' RBI single, plated fellow senior Morgan Altman and put runners on second and third for freshman Destiny Falquez, who ripped an RBI double down the right field line to bring home both runners and stretch the Griffs lead to 4-0.

Quinnipiac's Katherine Rodriguez scored the only Bobcat run of the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Emily Nicosia had a solid outing in the circle for the Blue and Gold in the opener, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out four batters and walking two. The East Amherst, N.Y., native improved her record to 4-3 on the year with the complete-game win.

GAME TWO
Game two got off to a quick start when senior Kara Paradowski singled through the left side and stole second to get into scoring position. Altman followed with an RBI single on her end to give the Griffs the 1-0 lead. In a day full of stolen bases, Altman stole second herself and was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. With Altman in scoring position, Dennis added her own RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.

Canisius carried its momentum into the second, putting up four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run RBI triple from Altman an RBI double from Dennis, to build a 6-0 cushion.

The Griffs held a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth when it put the game out of reach, tallying six runs off of five hits from four different players to take a 12-1 lead. Fazzolari closed out the scoring wiht a RBI single in the top of the fifth to determine the 12-run final margin.

Junior Alexis Churchill continued the dynamic pitching from game one, allowing only three hits and one run of her own. Of the 18 batters faced, she struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Quotes from Head Coach Kim Griffin
"It was a great day all around, both offensively and defensively. Both Emily (Nicosia) and Alexis (Churchhill) threw great games and kept Quinnipiac's hitters off of the bases.

"Our slappers did a great job of setting the table and we were able to exploit Quinnipiac's defense with our speed. We had a lot of clutch hits throughout the lineup when we needed them. This season, we haven't had to rely on one single person for RBI. We're getting run production throughout our lineup.

Game Notes
• Canisius had a combined 11 stolen bases in today's doubleheader.
• Morgan Altman had a career-high four runs to go along with her double and a triple in game two.
• Fazzolari had three doubles in today's doubleheader, moving her total to nine on the season.
• Five different players had a double or triple in today's doubleheader. Two players had both a double and a triple.
