Softball Sweeps Quinnipiac to Close Road Swing

The Canisius softball team swept the final two games of a four-game MAAC series at Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. Canisius was able to hold off a potential Bobcat comeback in game one, winning 7-4, before recording a 4-0 victory in th series finale.
 
With the sweep, Canisius moved its record to 16-9 on the season, while Quinnipiac fell to 7-21.

GAME ONE
Canisius took an ealy 2-0 lead in the top-half of the first thanks to a two-run homer by freshman Gianna Fazzolari, and an RBI-single by Morgan Altman gave the visiting team a 3-0 lead through three frames.
 
The Golden Griffins pushed their lead to 7-0 in the fourth after Kara Paradowski cleared the bases with a triple to center, and she later scored on an RBI-double by Altman. Altman ended the day with two hits, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored, while Paradowski drove on three with her team-leading second triple of the season. 
 
Quinnipiac scored all of its runs in the home-half of the fifth, crossing the plate four times to makes the score 7-4 in favor of the Griffs. Canisius starter Megan Giese was relieved with one out in the fifth after allowing four runs, but still earned the victory, her third of the year, after she gave up four runs on two hits while walking three and striking out three. Giese was relieved by junior Alexis Churchill, who held Quinnipiac scoreless in her 2.2 innings of work en route to her first career save.
 
GAME TWO
The nightcap of the doubleheader started slowly, but the Griffs scored first when Sydney Costan scored from third base on a wild pitch. Canisius added two more runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of RBI-singles by Paradowski and Altman to give the visiting team a 3-0 lead after five innings of play. The Griffs tacked on an insurance run in the sixth after pinch-runner Tiara Johnson scored from third on a passed ball.

Churchill took the circle as the starter in game two and earned her fourth win of the season after she allowed no runs on four hits to go with a strikeout in 4.0 innings of work. Senior Emily Nicosia came on in relief of Churchill and earned her first career save after she gave up four hits and fanned three in 3.0 innings.

Paradowski and Altman each had multi-hit efforts in the game two victory, with Paradowski stealing two bases as well. Costan's lone hit on the day was a double, her fourth of the year, which ranks fourth on the roster.
 
Game Notes
• Canisius now leads the all-time series against Quinnipiac 13-4.
• Canisius won four-straight MAAC road games for the first time since April 21-22, 2018, when the team swept two-game series at Saint Peter's and Manhattan.
• With her triple in game one, Kara Paradowski now has nine career triples, tying her for 15th in program history.
• With her home run in game one, Fazzolari has 11 extra-base hits this season. She is the first freshman to record 10-plus extars-base hits since Jessica Berzins in 2014.
• In the four-game series, Altman went 8-13 at the plate with six RBIs, two doubles, a triple and swiped five bases.

Up Next
Canisius will play its first home games in over a month on Wednesday, April 28, as the Griffs play host to long-time rival Niagara in a MAAC doubleheader. Game one of the two-game set is set for 3 p.m., at the Demske Sports Complex.
