Women’s Lacrosse Drops Contest Versus Niagara

Game Recap
The Canisius women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-4 setback versus "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y.

Senior Marissa Malvaso led the Golden Griffins (1-7, 1-7 MAAC) with two goals in the defeat. Junior Katie Smolensky and freshman Riley Davis accounted for the other two Canisius tallies. Senior goaltender Lauren Gilbert finished the game with 10 saves.

The Purple Eagles (5-3, 5-3 MAAC) were led by Lois Garlow's hat trick while teammate Lexi Braniecki scored two goals in the victory. Niagara would also have six different players post one goal in the contest.

Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead only 40 seconds into the game, when Malvaso started the afternoon's scoring courtesy of an assist by Smolensky. Niagara answered with three-straight goals, taking a 3-1 advantage with 15:18 remaining in the opening frame. Malvaso answered with her second goal of the afternoon to trim the Griffs deficit to one, but back-to-back Niagara scores extended the Purples Eagles' lead to three.

Davis' free-position score just before the end of the half would pull the Griffs within two, 5-3, going into the break.

Niagara would pull away from Canisius in the second half rattling off six unanswered goals to build its largest lead of the contest, 11-3, with a minute remaining. Smolensky would find the back of the net with 18 seconds on the clock to determine the final seven-goal margin.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Our lack of execution offensively is what has been preventing us from winning games. We have had the opportunities, but we are not putting the ball away. We need individuals to step and perform, and overall as a team, we need to perform better. This week will prove to be an important week of practice for us so we can grow as a team and improve."

Game Notes

• Canisius still holds the all-time series lead over Niagara, 17-13.
Marissa Malvaso extended her point streak to 23 contests. The senior from Syracuse, N.Y., currently sits at 99 career points.
• Gilbert has now stopped 10-plus shots in 11 career contests.
