Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Edged by St. Bonaventure

Jake Rosa tallied a game-high six points to lead St. Bonaventure in a 12-11 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Sunday at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.

Rosa tallied two goals and dished out a game-high four assists to pace the Bonnies attack (3-4). Austin Blumbergs recorded a hat trick while Mark Belles added a pair of tallies. Brett Dobson made 15 saves in goal for SBU.

Freshman Keegan Kozack recorded a hat trick to pace the Golden Griffins (3-3). Sophomore Nathan Conry tallied two goals while junior Mike Penna and Jacob Buck finished a goal and an assist each. Senior goalie Matt Vavonese made 11 saves between the pipes.

Canisius jumped out to an early lead thanks to goals from freshman Hunter Parucki and sophomore Ethan Coughlin while Belles got SBU on the board to make it a 2-1 contest at the end of the first.

The teams traded goals to open the second quarter before back-to-back tallies from Kozack and Conry gave Canisius it's largest lead of the contest, 5-2.

Ben Garcia and Blumbergs responded for the Bonnies, scoring before halftime to make it a one-goal game and ignite a 6-0 run that lasted until the midway portion of the third quarter to give SBU an 8-5 edge.

Canisius answered back with a trio of tallies over a 1:01 span that stretched from late in the third into early in the fourth to knot the score at 8-all.

SBU retook the lead moments later, with Jackson Rose and Blumbergs finding the back of the net just 45 seconds apart to pull back in front, only to see the Griffs respond with goals from Kozack and sophomore Connor Beals just six seconds apart to once again tie the score at 10-10.

Belles notched his second of the contest a little less than a minute after Beals' equalizer to put the Bonnies back in front, 11-10. Cian Collins scored his first of the season with less than four minutes remaining to push the SBU advantage to two, but freshman Jackson Webster scored his first collegiate tally with 3:32 remaining to pull Canisius within one, 12-11.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get however, as Canisius was unable to convert during its final possession, allowing the Bonnies to hold on for the one-goal victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"Unfortunately, we did not put together 60 minutes of lacrosse and that's what happens when you don't do that, you lose in tight games like we did today. That's something we have to correct instantly. We do not have many more chances left here down the stretch to position ourselves for a favorable spot in the conference tournament and it's just a very frustrating thing to be so up-and-down, day-to-day. We've got to learn to break through that.

"We made three bad decisions on the field that led to three possessions and three goals for them. We kind of ducked out the half there with one getting waved off and then unfortunately, we just didn't come with the right focus to start the third quarter and spotted them four and then we were playing catch up. We got back to a good spot and then and then mentally lapsed again and gave up a goal there and then we are chasing them again. So, it really comes down to these mental errors. We've got to learn to fight through them as a group and overcome and realize that a lacrosse game is not won in the first 15 or 20 minutes of the game, it is a 60-minute battle."
