Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Defeated by Niagara in Season Opener

Game Recap
The only goal of the game proved to be the most crucial, as the Canisius women's soccer team fell 1-0 in the "Battle of the Bridge" match on Tuesday against Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The game was the 2021 season opener for both programs.

The game remained scoreless late into the first half, despite consistent scoring opportunities from the Purple Eagles. In the 39th minute of play, Niagara's Florence Vailancourt played a cross from the right side into the box, where junior Annie Ibey knocked it home for the game's lone tally.

Canisius pressured in the second half for the equalizer, but were unable to solve Niagara keeper Clara Bornet, who made two saves to preserve the shutout.

The Griffs were out-shot by a 17-to-5 margin for the contest, with freshman keeper Jessica Jones making four saves on the night.

Freshman Tiani Fonoti, as well as seniors Hannah Kim and Shauna Lee, all had shots on goal for the Griffs.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"We started a bit slow, but it was our first 11-v-11 game in almost 500 days and it was hard without the fans and atmosphere. I think we came alive in the second half and really started to dominate our play. There is a lot to look forward to."

Game Notes
• Tuesday marked the first game played at the Demske Sports Complex, as well as the first game in general, for the Griffs, in 496 days .
