Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short at Manhattan

Game Recap
A goal in the game's 59th minute by Manhattan junior Kaitlyn Hogan proved to be the difference, as the host Jaspers posted a 1-0 win over the Canisius women's soccer team Tuesday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

The win in the season-opener for the Jaspers lets Manhattan start the season at 1-0-0, while Canisius slipped to 0-2-0 on the year.

Hogan recorded the game's only marker in the 59th minute after she settled a loose ball and sent a shot on goal from 40-yards out. That shot snuck just under the cross-bar to give Manhattan the lead, an advantage the Jaspers would hold for the remainder of the contest. The Golden Griffins were able to record just two shots after the halftime intermission, which included a shot on goal by sophomore Jen Romero in the game's 65th minute.

Manhattan goalkeeper Kim Mains made four stops en route to the shutout victory, while Canisius goalkeeper Jessica Jones recorded two saves on the day. Manhattan outshot the Griffs 11-8 for the game, despite the Griffs holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Manhattan ended the contest with seven corner kick opportunities against Canisius' two corner kick chances.

Interim Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"Today, I thought we showed improvement from the week before. We controlled parts of the game, but didn't generate enough chances, and the ones we did, we didn't capitalize on. Even though we did not get the result we wanted, we are pleased to see improvement and we will continue to build on each performance."

Game Notes
• This marked the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs. Canisius leads the series 16-11-2.
• Tuesday's result ends Canisius' two-game win streak in this series, which dated back to the 2018 campaign.
• Junior Emily Dorr and freshman Tiani Fonoti each recorded two shots in the game for the Griffs.
