Women’s Lacrosse Comes Up Short at Siena

Game Recap
The host Siena Saints scored six-straight goals in the late stages of the first half to erase a three-goal deficit en route to a 17-8 win over Canisius in MAAC women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Canisius sophomore Paige Stachura posted her first career hat trick and added an assist in the loss for Canisius, which fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss. Senior Marissa Malvaso and freshman Riley Davis each were each credited with a goal and an assist on the day, while senior Miranda Malvaso and juniors Alexandra Pound and Katie Smolensky also found the back of the net for the road team.

For Siena (2-0), junior Mary Soures scored a career-high seven goals for the Saints, highlighted by four-straight scores in the decisive first-half run. Her teammate, Kaitlyn Dowsett recorded three goals and three assists, while Annie Brennan added three goals as well.

Canisius jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, as Pound put the Griffs up 1-0 just 56 seconds into the contest. Back-to-back free-position goals from Miranda Malvaso and Stachura in the span of 2:16 gave Canisius a 3-0 advantage, but the Saints took over from there with six-straight markers over the span of the next 12:29 to make the score 6-3.

Stachura scored her second of the game with 1:32 left before intermission off a feed from Marissa Malvaso to send the teams to the intermission with Siena holding a 7-5 lead. To open the second stanza, Siena tallied the game's next nine goals in 14:52 to make the score 16-5. Canisius senior goaltender Lauren Gilbert made eight saves in 36:05 of work before making way for junior Shannon Maroney, who closed out the final 23:55 of the contest with three stops. For the game, Siena outshot Canisius 38-23, and the Saints held an 18-9 advantage in draw controls.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Today we lacked consistency and discipline in our performance. That's what hurt us. We had a strong performance yesterday, and we did not carry that consistency over to today's game."

"We started the game out strong, and then let Siena go on that first-half run. We were able to battle back to get it close at halftime, but then again, we lacked consistency and discipline in our systems to start the second half and that allowed Siena to pull away. Good teams will do that to you."

"We were able to learn a lot about our team this weekend in our two-game swing. We need to get back to work and turn things around when we face Quinnipiac on Friday."

Game Notes
• Sunday was the 26th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Canisius leading the series 16-10.
• Stachura had one multi-goal game in her career prior to Sunday. That came on March 7, 2020 when she had two goals against UAlbany.
• Stachura is now one of six active Griffs with a career hat trick to her credit. Marissa Malvaso is the program's active leader with six career hat tricks.
• Davis has multiple points in each of her first two career games in Blue and Gold after she recorded three goals in the team's overtime loss to Siena on Saturday.

Up Next
Canisius will return to action March 12 when the Griffs head to Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
