Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Canisius Defeated by Quinnipiac on the Road

Game Recap
Paced by Megan Szawlowski's four goals Friday afternoon, Quinnipiac (1-2, 1-2 MAAC) was able to edge Canisius (0-3, 0-3 MAAC) 13-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action in Hamden, Conn.

In the third contest this season for both programs, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead only five minutes into the game. Canisius would quickly tie the game up at three apiece, courtesy of goals by Miranda Malvaso, Marissa Malvaso and Katie Smolensky.

The game of scoring runs would continue, as three straight goals by the home team would give the Bobcats a 6-3 advantage with 8:17 left in the first half. A goal at the 4:32 mark remaining in the half by Paige Stachura, and a Quinnipiac score by Desiree Kleberg would make the score 7-4, heading into the intermission.

Quinnipiac would come out of the break and build their lead out to an 8-4 advantage with 25:27 remaining in regulation. Four straight goals for the Golden Griffins, two from Smolensky and a goal each for Marissa and Miranda Malvaso would tie the contest up at eight goals with 19:54 left.

Following a Quinnipiac timeout, the Bobcats would rattle off four consecutive scores, pushing their lead out to a 12-8 edge with 10 minutes remaining. A score by MAAC Rookie of the Week Riley Davis with 8:02 left on the day would bring Canisius within three once again. Quinnipiac would net their final goal on the day with 6:28 left on a free position shot from Liza Bailey. Canisius responded right away, courtesy of Stachura's second score of the afternoon, but the Bobcats sealed the victory, 13-10.

Canisius' balanced scoring attack Friday afternoon was led by Smolensky, who had her second hat trick of her career. Sisters Marissa and Miranda Malvaso, as well as Stachura had two goals each in the contest. Goalkeeper Lauren Gilbert finished the afternoon with 16 saves.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Overall, I thought we competed and worked hard throughout the entire game. We were able to battle back from being down and showed resiliency. Going forward we need to be the team to come out and spark a lead, instead of being down."

"It was great to see a balanced effort on the offensive end and get multiple people on the score sheet today. We have multiple threats on the offensive side that can make us difficult to defend. Give credit to our defense as well, they made some strong stops when we needed them, that helped us spark a run. Once again we were solid this afternoon in the net."

"We are excited to be able to play at home next weekend. Marist is a very strong MAAC team. We are going to use the early part and majority of this coming week to focus on us, and then toward the end of the week we will start looking toward Marist. Back-to-back games are always tough like we'll have next weekend, but the fast turnaround is the same for both teams."

Game Notes

• Smolensky had her second career hat trick in the contest. Her first three-goal performance was March 30, 2019 also against Quinnipiac. Her second score at the 25:02 mark in the second half was the 25th goal in her Canisius career
• The series history between Canisius and Quinnipiac is now tied 5-5. Canisius' last win on the road against the Bobcats in Hamden was April 14, 2018, with the Griffs winning by a margin of 12-7.
• Gilbert's 16-save performance in goal is her ninth game with 10-plus saves in her career.
• Friday afternoon, freshman midfielder Riley Davis was announced the winner of MAAC Rookie of the Week for her efforts last weekend. Davis scored the first three collegiate goals of her career Saturday against Siena, including the game-tying goal with two seconds left to send the game to overtime. In the second matchup with the Saints, Davis would net a goal and dish out an assist, to finish her opening weekend with four goals and one helper.
