Women's Soccer Earns First Victory of the Season

Tuesday was a day filled with firsts for the Canisius women's soccer team, as the Golden Griffins posted a 2-0 victory over Iona in MAAC action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
With the win, Canisius improves 1-4, while the Gaels fell to 0-3-1 on the year.
 
After a scoreless first half, freshman Tiani Fonoti scored her first collegiate goal past Iona goalkeeper Emma Havrilla to give the Griffs a one-goal advantage in the game's 46th minute. Junior Hannah Morpurgo was credited with her second career assist on the play.
 
In the 89th minute, sophomore Jen Romero locked up the team's first win of the campaign after she found the back of the net with her career tally. Sophomore teammate Julia Schurr was credited with the assist on Canisius' insurance marker.

Canisius freshman Jessica Jones made two saves in her first career clean sheet. The win was the program's first since the Griffs closed out the 2019 campaign with a 1-0 home win over Marist. It also marks the first career head coaching win for interim head coach Ryan Louis.
 
Game Notes
• Tuesday's game marked the 24th all-time meeting between the two programs. The series is now tied at 10-10-4.
• The Griffs have allowed just one goal in the last 270:00 of game action at home.
• Jones is the first Canisius freshman goalkeeper to earn a shutout win since former Griffs goalie Alana Rossi posted five shutouts in 2016.

• Canisius will complete the 2021 home slate on Saturday, April 3 with a MAAC contest against Fairfield. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
