Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Dooms Women’s Soccer at Siena

Caitlin Wania scored the game's lone goal in the 87th minute to lift Siena to a 1-0 victory over Canisius In Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Leslie Adams stopped all five shots she faced in goal for the host Saints (2-0, 2-0 MAAC), who remained undefeated on the young season with Saturday's triumph.

Freshman Jessica Jones recorded five saves the Golden Griffins (0-4, 0-4 MAAC). Five players – , junior Luca Fahmer, sophomores Lexi Perry and Jen Romero and freshmen Tiana Fonoti and Sophia Chelini  – each had a shot on goal for the Griffs.

With the game scoreless in the final five minutes of regulation, Wania put Siena in front with her first of the campaign, collecting a loose ball that was created after Jones knocked the ball away from Carrie Krohn during a 1v1 situation and depositing it into the back of the net from the top of the box.

Romero nearly brought the Griffs level just moments after Wania's opening salvo, as she got off an attempt towards the Siena goal, but Adams was up to the challenge to preserve the Saints' one-goal cushion.

Earlier in the second half, the Saints nearly got on the board in the 68th minute, when Jayanna Monds attempt from close range was headed away at the goal line by junior defender Maya Palmer to keep the game scoreless.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"This was a really tough one to lose. I felt like we definitely did enough to at least take the game to overtime, if not win outright. I'm really proud of how the team battled and fought for 90 minutes. Despite the loss, we are confident that if we stay committed to our game while at the same time cleaning up some little mistakes, we can do very well. We have competed in every game so far; we just need some minor adjustments and things will start going our way."
